IDEAS FOR THE YEAR! HELP US!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

These are descriptions of events that UPSNA is planning on putting on for YOU this Spring!! To make it happen, we need your help to research the costs so that we can get the appropriate funding from ASUP. Our budget is due to ASUP NOV. 3rd! We need your help!!

Mock Disaster

University of Portland has been involved in a Mock Disaster in Portland very recently, and through UPSNA we want to do it again. One of our nursing students Anna Vernon has suggested partnering with Providence St. Vincent’s Medical Center. St. V’s has great resources for the purpose of Mock Disaster preparations. Justus Green, one of our co-presidents has also been in contact with Lori Chorpenning as she was the coordinator for the Mock Disaster preparation event that UP put on recently, she is a wonderful resource!!

§ What UPSNA needs is a committee of students that would be able to make contact with St. Vincent’s’

§ We need to know what kind of funding we would need to make an event like this happen

§ Please sign up on the Budget Committee if you are interested in looking into the associated costs!

§ Contact Anna Vernon vernon10@up.edu with questions about how to get in contact with St. V’s for this event!!

§ Contact Lori Chorpenning chorpenn@up.edu about her experience coordinating the previous Mock Disaster preparation event!

§ Contact eschmidt@up.edu or upsna@up.edu if you have any questions!

UPSNA Dance

We are planning on putting on a UPSNA Dance at a site on campus! Currently, we are hoping to use Franz Hall for the event. We thought this would be a fun way to build community within the nursing school and with students from another school on campus.

  • We have estimated costs for the event, but we need the committee to find out if those estimates are accurate.
  • We also need to know the maximum capacity of the Franz lobby based on fire codes.
  • We need to know if there is a cost for Public Safety’s presence at the event
  • We need to know if there are other costs we have not anticipated. Members of the committee will need to research and plan this event so that we can request the money we will need to make it happen from ASUP.
  • Contact eschmidt@up.edu or upsna@up.edu if you have any questions!

Résumé Workshop (Juniors & Seniors)

We thought this would be a very valuable event to help juniors and seniors prepare for the job market and how they will need to present themselves ‘on paper’ to compete for jobs. We also want to make this event a success so that it is available to underclassmen when they reach the upper division nursing curriculum and are closer to entering the job market.

  • We need a committee to make contact with Career Services (they are located in Orrico Hall below the Health Center) to find out if we could partner with them for this event.
  • We also need to know what kind of funding we will need to make this event happen.
  • Please see the estimated budget as a guide, and research from there as to what the costs will be. We need to know if there are costs that we haven’t anticipated.
  • Contact eschmidt@up.edu or upsna@up.edu if you have any questions!

Mock Interviews (Seniors)

This is another event that we thought would be very valuable for seniors about to enter the job market. Our goal is to have faculty involvement as the interviewer, and then through the Mock Interview and a review of the interview afterwards, students could learn how to interview most effectively.

  • What we need to is for students to research the costs of this event.
  • There is a maximum amount of money that ASUP will approve for reimbursement of anyone involved in putting on an event that clubs can offer as an incentive and partial compensation for participation. We need to know what that amount is, we’ve heard it is between $25-$50.
  • We also need students to recruit faculty for this event!
    • Remember that we are hoping to make this event a success so that it can be available through UPSNA for future members of the upper division nursing program!

Mr. Murse Pageant

Several of the board members have been involved with pageants as a fundraiser for a charity. We have not chosen an organization yet, and are open to suggestions of where proceeds from this event could be directed.

The pageant would have different portions, currently we are thinking of including a casual wear modeling session and dance, talent segment, future fantasy, etcetera. If you have ever been to an event similar to this you probably have an idea of what the UPSNA board is trying to put on, if not, it is similar to Mr. Corrado.

  • Beyond the participants, we will need a lot of people to be involved in this event.
  • Before that, we need to know what it is going to cost to put this event on. You are welcome to use the estimated budget as a guide.
    • Of the estimated costs, we need committee members to research whether or not those are accurate estimates.
  • We will need judges and an M.C. for the event—so similar to the Mock Interviews, we need to know what the amount of money is that we can request from ASUP for reimbursement of anyone involved in putting on an event that clubs can offer as an incentive and partial compensation for participation. Again, we need to know what that amount is, we’ve heard it is between $25-$50.
  • We also need to know what it would cost to use a space like BC Aud for the event, if Public Safety will need to present and those costs.
  • Please use what we have estimated as a guide, but also research to see if the estimates are correct!
  • Contact eschmidt@up.edu or upsna@up.edu if you have any questions!

Guest Speakers with Student Alumni Association

The Student Alumni Association (SAA) is planning on sponsoring panels of alumni to come and do a panel discussion from each school on campus. When they have their School of Nursing Alumni Panel, we have talked with them about co-sponsoring this event. It will be a great opportunity to hear from alumni about their experiences, where they have gone since they graduated, and the potential for networking with them!

  • We need the committee to contact the SAA President Malori Pierce piercem09@up.edu to find out more about this event.
    • We need to know what the SAA needs from us financially and volunteer wise.
    • We need to know when they are planning to have the event, etcetera.
  • Contact eschmidt@up.edu or upsna@up.edu if you have any additional questions!

Relay for Life

University of Portland hosts a Relay for Life event every year in the spring. We need to know what the costs would be for us to have a team, potentially make t-shirts and anything we haven’t anticipated.

  • Contact Carling Vaux vaux09@up.edu with any additional questions!

Guest Speakers We Invite Through UPSNA

In addition to the School of Nursing Panel event, we are hoping to bring more speakers to campus, especially in areas that most of us will not have clinical or other exposure to during school. Some of the examples we thought about were a nurse from Pediatrics and OB since everyone will not have clinical experience in both areas. We were also considering nurses from Life Flight, ED (Emergency Department), NICU (Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit), and a nurse from an international organization such as Doctors Without Borders or Medical Teams Northwest. We are certainly looking for any other suggestions of areas of nursing that you would like to hear from, including advanced practice nurses such as Certified Nurse Anesthetists!

§ Again, we need to know what amount of financial reimbursement and partial compensation ASUP will approve for us to offer to speakers that would be willing to participate in our event. We need to know what that amount is, we’ve heard it is between $25-$50.

§ We also need to know if there is a cost of reserving a space, BC Aud ideally in this case for the event.

§ If we are able to provide refreshments, what would the cost through Bon Appetit be?

§ What would our advertising costs be? Etcetera.

§ Contact eschmidt@up.edu or upsna@up.edu if you have any additional questions.

NSNA Conference

This year we are hoping to send several board members of UPSNA to the National Student Nurses Association Conference in the Spring. University of Portland has not been represented by students of UPSNA for years, and this is something we want to be involved in. We have a lot to offer at a conference like this one. A great example of what we can bring to the table is our experience on Dedicated Education Units (DEUs). UP is one of the few nursing schools in the country that has created these units in local hospitals where our students go for clinicals, and this is a great opportunity to share this with other nursing students around the nation.

  • We need to research what the costs of sending some of the UPSNA board members to this conference would be so that we can request the appropriate funding from ASUP. This includes:
    • Flights
    • Hotel
    • Food
    • Conference Costs
  • Justus Green, one of our co-presidents is one of the leaders for this committee. Please contact greenj09@up.edu with any questions!

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO
1. Help with the Budget
2. Be on one of these Committees to plan!
